We have searched a long time to find new blood lines of BMD's who are not or hardly related to BMD's used in the Netherlands and surrounding countries. Outcrossing dogs (breeding with BMD's who are not or hardly not related to each other) improves the longevity and strength of the breed! And that was where we were looking for. Europe is relatively small and so it is easy to drive to another country to use a "foreign" male. That is why one has to look further for new lines and that is why we came to the USA Specialty in Wisconsin in 2000. We were impressed with the dogs, the high standard of quality and the way health issues have been tackled. Talking to breeders, watching and discussing dogs and lines resulted two years later in having KING been shipped overseas to Europe....

But we continue by having a look at his childhood:
King from pup to 'teenager': |
General information on King
King is born at the well known American BMD kennel of Bobbie Hefner called "SWISS STARS". Bobbie breeds since the early days of BMD's in America . She is an experienced breeder with the same breeding goals as we do have: healthy Bernese Mountain Dogs with at nice temperament and able to do their work in the show ring. That is why we like to have so many "Swiss Star" dogs in King's pedigree. His ancestors are free on hips and elbows (as is King him self as well) and have been doing well at the shows. Have a look at the father (Sirius) and mother Chloe:

Sirius became in 2008 "Top Producer" for the BMDCA in America.
Top Producer means that a male has produced at least six puppies that have
become Champions in conformation and those first six were:

On this picture is Sirius 9 years young:

Chloe (mother of King) has her CD and Draft Dog titles

March 2010 mother: Swiss Stars Sweet Clover (10 years old, left) and brother Hunter (8 years)

Self assured at 5 months.
But as written earlier we also breed for longevity and that is one of the main things discussed before sending King to us. From the first and second generation ancestors 3 dogs are still alive. In the third generation Weron died at 10 years of age, Little Bears died on an age of 9 years, De-Li's shaping the future (Jackson) died on an age of 11.5 years. Swiss Star's Mid Summers Knight (Oberon) died at 9 years old. And also have a look at the picture of Dalaleds Bamse on which she is 10 years of age and "still alive and kicking"! King's grandfather was Ch Top Hat's Star Maker who was put to sleep at 6 and only because his owner died and it was her wishes to have all her dogs put to sleep at that time. Ch Mardi Graus Mirage v Be Li's was also owned by the same owner as Top Hats Star Maker and was also put to sleep for no reason. This was a very sad story for these two wonderful dogs. But in the end all beautiful ancestors (most of them have the USA CH title) with nice health records on getting old and we do hope that King has this 'getting old ability' in his genes!

WATCH HIS VIDEO...
YES, they are available via internet. So take some time and look at the nice video's of King in his younger days (he was around two years old when recorded). There are three video's available. In the first one you see him playing with three of our other males: (Gobbel, Henk en Prince). They are real friends together and we think you will see that yourself as well. (push the play button to start the video, if you double click on the video you will get the full screen mode):

On the next video you will see how easy to train he is. We are learning him to pull a sledge in the snow and he loves it. Within 5 minutes he acted as he always had pulled a sledge and with such a power and speed!! (push the play button to start the video):

On this last video we show how he easily passed the Swiss based temperament test in the Netherlands under supervision of the Dutch BMD club. He passed with the highest grade possible: an EXCELLENT. (push also here the play button to start the video):
King is a big, sturdy dog with a nice head and nice bone. He moves freely and straight in front and in rear. Besides that he has a very outgoing and friendly character. He is very social with the people but also with our other BMD's and animals on the Barking Bunch. He just is one out of a million! Our dream of having a BMD matching all our wishes has come true! Thank you Bobbie (and co-breeder Melanie Brandstad) for trusting us such a nice specimen of the breed: SWISS STARS KING OF HEARTS (of our heart anyway)!!
King at 18 months old.
